Driving a convertible to the ski mountain apparently attracts attention from everyone

This weekend marks the third time that I have taken my Miata up to Sugarbush Ski Resort in Warren, VT. Normally I get the occasional stare and/or picture taken of me but this time was over the top. Every time we stopped for gas, stopped to get food, or just parked at the mountain, someone would come up with something to say. Now a Miata is a pretty normal car and it was covered in every inch with salt/sand so it was just like all the other cars. Of course the top was down but it was like 30+ degrees (very hot for skiing in January). Generally people who talked to me had owned a Miata before or knew someone who did. But there were a ton of other “normal” folk who were just like “nice car” or “aren’t you cold?”. And then when I stopped at a KFC on the way home, a car actually followed me in to take a picture and then drove off. It just became hilarious to me all of the attention a top-down Miata with skiis attached to the trunk heading to/from the ski mountain gets.

I fell like the mountain is one of the most appropriate destinations for cold weather top back travel. Side note, the open lift that goes from peak to peak is the worst place on earth when it’s a cold windy day.

Ahh yes the Slide Brook Express. That lift is just cold and slow. Definitely better to take the bus between the two, it is quicker and heated. I do enjoy how it goes downhill though, very weird experience on a lift. On a nice day though, it is actually a good spot to eat lunch. Nice scenic view and by the time you finish eating, you are at the other mountain. Efficient use of time!

lol they need to remove the “express” from the name of that lift. I can imagine that it’s great on a calm day. When I was there last it was below zero and crazy windy. That lift ride was like “ok, will we be blown off of the mountain or just be frozen by the time we get to the other side.”

A friend of mine owns a 2006(?) hardtop convertible. The only time I see it with the top up is when it’s parked, on the track, or it’s raining. If it’s cold, he puts on a hat, cranks up the heat, and turns on the heated seats. Toasty.

Of course, we do live in Louisiana....

Heated seats sure would be nice. My leather seats are quite cold in the winter mornings here in NJ. Being in Louisiana, I imagine it never actually gets cold so that is kind of cheating lol. I only leave the top up in the frigid cold (less than 20F or so) because the vinyl has a very real risk of ripping due to the temperature. Unfortunate, because I would still enjoy it down in that weather.

It did snow here a few years ago, but that is a rare event. We were enjoying 75° weather just yesterday. :)

I grew up further north where ice was the norm and snow was a treat. It’s true, the people here are pansies when it comes to cold.

We pay for it with long, hot, humid summers.

Oh yeah I am way more of a pansie when it comes to hot though. 75 (plus humidity) is about the maximum comfortable temperature I want to deal with. Anything beyond that is way too hot. I can do 90+ if it is a dry heat but humidity kills me. Ideal temp for me is like mid 50s.

I’ve often wondered about the role conditioning plays in weather preferences. My wife grew up in south Texas, so she prefers the weather when it is hot and dry. Being raised further north, I prefer cool and dry. The high humidity in Louisiana doesn’t suit either of us!
